WAL-MART IS A POTENTIAL BOMB

We could say that Wal-Mart almost equals the name of combining inexpensiveness with convenience. People could find what they want and need all the time. If we are hungry at midnight, we can go to Wal-Mart to look for some food. It is an amazing mall that it offers unlimited supply to people, like food, drink, tools, clothes, and furniture. However, it also gives people awful impact. Wal-Mart is not beneficial due to the fact that it causes the economic, employee, and social problems.

First, Wal-Mart monopolizes the market in America. Due to its convenience and 24-hours service, it draws a lot of consumers to buy what they need there. However, it causes many local businesses to disappear. When Wal-Mart sets up its branches in a certain place, people tend to purchase goods in it instead of in the other small local shop, such as grocery stores, deli stores, or clothes shops, because Wal-Mart has more complete selection of goods and people do not need to run around to gather them. It is why the original stores near it are forced to close gradually. Moreover, another economic effect is that a part of owners whose companies are closed by force by Wal-Mart might immigrant in order to find another market which they have a chance to earn their life. However, the owner brings her/his money into another country. For instance, the department store is closed in America, and then it is rebuilt in Canada, the owner need to take money which s/he earns in America and brings money into Canada because s/he is Canadian. Therefore, it is very terrible that Wal-Mart effect lets many services closed and money flow out of America.

Next, there are some problems from Wal-Mart’s bad treatment to its employees. It has an unfair salary system to cause the employees to not have high quality life. Wal-Mart gives lower money to its employees, and the salary is not enough to let them keep their lives. They might need to find the second jobs to keep their life if they want to have enough money to balance their expense. However, it will spend their whole time to work, and they do not have any time to take care of their life quality. Furthermore, Wal-Mart doesn’t pay attention to the employee trains, which can help workers deal with the need of its consumers and manage goods easily, efficiently and exactly. When we cannot find out an ice cube box on the stands, we will ask the workers where it is, and then hope that they can lead us to get it instead of the answer “Sorry, I do not know. You can ask the worker over there,” and then going away. Mal-Mart’s stuff always lacks knowledgeable service. In short, Wal-Mart doesn’t care its workers’ quality and then its workers don’t have responsibilities to customers, either.

Finally, Wal-Mart brings some social problems when we buy its products. Mal-Mart’s goods are cheaper and convenient but we will lower our life qualities if we buy them because Mal-Mart gets its products from developing countries, whose factories do not care about products’ quality. For instance, some consumers buy clothes or shoes form Mal-Mart, and they might cost their less than a half price compared to other clothes shops. However, which ones can not be used for many times and then broken soon. Additionally, most people choose the one time-use goods in Mal-Mart, and it causes trash pollution. American people like to run a party, and buy a lot of disposable dishes and tools. The Wal-Mart is their “best choice” because it has many disposable goods. The low price goods cause people have worse habits, and do not care about the pollution, which harms our environment seriously.

People claim that Mal-Mart has a nice return policy for customers who get the flawed products or regret buying its goods. However, it is not true in what it has good return policy. In fact, Mal-Mart has fewest limits in the return system, and they cater to customers excessively. This unlimited return policy easily causes consumers to have bad consume habits. To illustrate, we often see the customers to queue in a long line in order to refund goods they just bought, and the servers do not ask much and check goods even though people only respond them “I just don’t like it.” It is not a responsible attitude because people who have responsibility often think twice before buying. Looking over some countries like Taiwan, people always buy merchandise carefully because customers should argue with clerks if they want to return the product which they just bought it. This custom helps Taiwanese people do everything after thinking. According to above, Wal-Mart has a bad policy for return.

In conclusion, Wal-Mart is harmful to American because it gives America negative influences, which cause the smaller businesses in America to not exist. Furthermore, the employees working at Wal-Mart do not get reasonable treatment they should get, and Mal-Mart lowers people’s life and environment quality. Therefore, the United States will lose the name of the first strongest country in the world if Wal-Mart’s development is going on. Now, we should not support Wal-Mart to continue growing, or America will become a sub-country soon.

Winning Microsoft

In “Forbes Releases Latest List of US Rich,” Farwell (2007) writes “The very top of the list was unchanged: Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates led the list for the 14th straight year, this time with a net worth estimated at $59 billion” (para. 5). According the about, we know in 1994, Bill Gates, was 38 years old, become the richest man on earth. Microsoft Corporation that he runs not only brings a great deal of fortune, but also creates human’s extraordinary era in which a lot of people use computers. It is very interesting to know why young Bill Gates can succeed in business, but regular people can not do like him. In fact, Microsoft Corp. is successful due to the fact that it is a market’s forerunner, has some insightful and gifted leaders, owns countless resources, and gives welfare back to people.

Microsoft is a famous international enterprise creating and producing software for the computer. Dictionary.com defines “The biggest supplier of operating systems and other software for IBM PC compatibles. Software products include MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows, Windows NT, Microsoft Access…” (para.1). It also offers people foundations to deal with their documents, to save their precious digital pictures, and to enjoy surfing on the Internet. According to Tate (2000), Microsoft Corporation has been run since 1975 by Bill Gates and his best friend, Paul Allen. The first device that was a small box did not have a screen or a keyboard. After that, Microsoft Winders was made in 1983, and its later version, Microsoft Winders 1.0, was a new software with bitmap displays and mouse pointing devices. Moreover, recently the corporation publishes Windows Vista, more of personality, interaction, and entertainment. However, there is an opposition about Microsoft Corporation. Some people recognize it monopolizes the market, as result of a lack of competition. Also, hackers like to invade its system and plant viruses, which cause data damage. Furthermore, people think that its programs can be difficult to set up. However, even though some people do not like to use Microsoft’s products, we cannot disagree that it is successful now.

First, the pioneer often gives the leadership or benefits first, and Microsoft Corporation was a forerunner in the computer business. It started the business in 1970’s when every organization dealt with data like the incoming and outgoing accounts by hand. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft Corporation, was a good sensor, who knew what the market needed. Tate (2000) explains Bill Gates and Paul Allen forecasted there would be a market for desk computers, so they actively developed this virgin area. Their prediction was right, and let them earn more money. Moreover, Microsoft met a good chance to cooperate with IBM, and develop a major software company. In “Reference.com” the author says “Dos (Disk Operating System) was the operating system that brought the company its real success. On August 12, 1981, after negotiations with Digital Research failed, IBM awarder a contract to Microsoft to provide a version of the CP/M operating system…Microsoft rose from a small player to one of the major software vendors in the home computer industry” (para. 2). This opportunity caused Microsoft to become a magnate, and settled its later stable status. Therefore, the foundation of successful company is catching the chance before others and using it in full.

Next, a successful company always has unusual leaders support it. The original owners of Microsoft Corporation have some characteristics, such as creativeness to make ideas, sensitiveness to hold the demand of customers. First, the leaders were creative. They invented the visual interface for computers, such as Windows 95, which was more convenient to operate than before when people only can type programming languages that people need to learn hardly like C++. It was originality in human history. Secondly, they were sensors of the needy in the era. For example, they understood many international companies had a lot of data, which need to be put them in the order quickly and effectively. Due to this reasons, they invent unprecedented the software, Microsoft Offices, to deal with date of big companies. This sensitive ability to the social demand is a feature of a leader.

Thirdly, Microsoft Corporation is successful because of owning enormous resources like skilled people and abundant experience. However, it is easy for Microsoft Corp. to gather these capitals. In employee aspect, there are many professional people of talent around the world working for it. According to Microsoft: Careers-United States(2007), Microsoft Corp. separates many departments like Worldwide Operations, Corporate Operations, Human Resources, Finance, Sales, Marketing, Legal &Corporate Affairs, Consulting, Support, and Technical. Their workers feel honored because Microsoft Corp. is proud of international honor and it offers high salary to its employee. Moreover, in experience aspect, the company has run for over thirty years, so it owns a sophisticated mode for management and invention. Since,1990’s, it has released Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows NT, and Windows XP. Recently, it has let off the new version, Window Vista, a newest operating system. Due to this rich experience, they can continue to publish new version and earn more money. As a result, these gigantic resources give Microsoft Corp. huge power to stand erect on earth.

Finally, the fourth successful secret of Microsoft Corporation is that it does not forget to give back to the world. It is important because it is a way to win to people’s hearts. First, Bill Gates set up a Charity. In “Gates Open To More Charity Work”, Purcell (2006) writes “Bill Gates announced that over the next two years he will withdraw from his daily role at Microsoft on order to dedicate himself full- time to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation” (para. 1). So, Bill Gates established the charity to contribute himself to the society. In the event, this action improved his company’s good reputation. Moreover, Bill Gates also donated to the education. In “San Diego School Surprise” Purcell (2006) claims “Students at San Diego high School were thrilled at the unexpected …about an $11 million donation in 2003 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation” (para.1). He offered the money to poor students in order to help the students finish their school works. Indeed, Bill Gates’ charity let many people feel Microsoft Corp. is useful to the society.

Opponents of Microsoft Corporation claim it is not a successful company because their Windows’ operation system has some loopholes and is invaded easily by hackers. However, it is not unfair to say that. First, there is no perfect software existing in the world because the software is written by people who often make mistakes. Although the product has some flaws, the product from Microsoft Corp.’s flaws is fewer than other companies’. The company employs the people of talent about technology to design almost perfect computer programs. Moreover, they have strong workgroup to connect to each other in order to fix the problems immediately. That is why we often find the reminder windows on our computer, which ask us to update the newest programs to avoid our data exposing the damage. Therefore, the Microsoft’s software is a good program. Next, their software is not invaded easily. In fact, it is that hackers like to invade Microsoft’s products more that others’. Hackers like to challenge themselves to discover the software’s loopholes. If hackers can damage this system, they will get the feel of achievement. Unfortunately, many hackers like to challenge Microsoft Corporation because they think many top people of talent around the world work for it. Hackers often say the company monopolizes the market, but it is just an excuse to convince people that they do it for the justice. In the other words, Microsoft systems are often invaded by hackers because Microsoft Corporation’s software is not easily to break, not because its systems are not good enough. Chinese has a proverb “A big tree is hit easily by wind.” It means that the top one gets envied easily. That is why Microsoft Systems are often attacked because Microsoft Corp. is one of the top companies in the world.

In conclusion, we can say Microsoft Corporation is a really successful company. The owners not only had an unusually perspicacity to be a technologic precursor, but they also had the power to lead the company’s development. Furthermore, the company pays attention and is willing to give more welfare to catch the talents. Also, the company understands where it getting profits, where it should give back. These strategies are important courses for who wants to run successful business.

EAP2-A Summary and Response#1

In Zussman’s (2005) article, “Fighting Corruption Is a Global Concern,” he claims that Canadians should reform their corruption problems. First, Zussman discusses that anti-corruption conference in Beijing that helps Canadians think about corruption in the world. Next, he talks about the Transparency International report making corruption issues visible to the public. Many notions and global organizations have been trying to decline corruption in society because corruption consumes inestimable money every year. Moreover, Zussman argues many governments decide to cut off corruption due to economic recession, the influence of people’s quality of life, and distrust between governments and their people. Also, he explains that if people want to remove corruption effectively, they should make stronger laws to monitor finance activities, know how the laws limit them, follow the laws completely, and have perfect people to lead them. Last, the author states there is a big corruption problem in Canada in the present decade. However, Zussman’s says that the global issue about corruption can let Canadian think about their national systems.

It is clear that anti-corruption is beneficial because corruption gives people lots of problems. It can influence not only outer environment like social welfare, but also involve inner mind of human, such as greediness. The government around the world and people on earth should fight for corruption in order not to do three reasons: increasing the gap between the rich and the poor, reducing public building’s quality, and polluting healthy spirit of human.

First, corruption leads to a poverty gap to become deeper. No one wants to risk affording heavy punish expect large benefits. Therefore, a hung of money will pour into greedy people’s banks if they corrupt. For instance, there are a lot of news about politicians who corrupts with businesspeople, and the money they like last president in Korean, Youngsam Kim, illegally gain often exceeds over millions US dollars once. According these huge money, they can become richer soon. As a result, it enlarges distance between the rich and poor. Moreover, money which comes from the general people will flow into rapacious people quickly, and then the gap between the rich and poor will turn deeper. In Taiwan over the past, businesses used to collude with the officials, and then they became very rich in the short time. Nevertheless, Taiwan government did not use this money, which was from people’s taxes and finally ran into certain people’s accounts, to help the needy. As the result, a lot of beggars existed on the streets. It is illegal and unfair for the poor. We should prohibit corruption, or the country can not have healthy economic system.

Second, corruption causes the quality of public poverty to be easily broken, and endanger people life. Some building companies want to gain more chances to earn more money, so they bribe some politician and get opportunities which they can build the pubic constructions or repair them. However, those companies decline the material’s quality in order to reduce their expenses of the capitalized cost. It is very harmful to lives. A catastrophe in 1999, the 921 earthquake of Taiwan, many people died because the buildings where they lived fell in. Experts found some frameworks of the collapsed building are consisted of empty iron kegs. Ironically, most of buildings were constructed by Taiwan government. It is so sad because we give our government taxes not to injure our benefits, poverty, and life, but want to get a promise to protect us from our countries. Therefore, we should be against corruption to avoid selfish people killing innocent ones.

Finally, corruption teaches that people can use any ways to chase money, including immoral methods. Corruption often happens under the table, but if it prevails in a country, and can not be stopped, it will change people’s minds to believe that corruption is right. In the past, Taiwanese candidates like to give some money to the people to vote them, but the people did not think receiving money was wrong because everyone did that, and even if the people did not take money, the candidates still take more money from their taxes. It is terrifyingly people think corruption is correct. Moreover, this myth also helps useless people give an unmatchable job. The rich people in Taiwan would think if they want their later generations to gain a good job. Therefore, they would just give some money to the power people, and then they can pass. For example, a person may not need to graduate from the high school, but s/he gives some money to a bar association, and then can become a lawyer. It is very awful that people do not have knowledge about laws and to deal with a lawsuit. In according that, we should oppose corruption or vicious concept will cause the unfair and destroying world.

In conclusion, corruption is adverse for human. It brings the unequal economic system among human being. Also, it gives people worse environment in the public and private sector. Furthermore, it smears the people’s minds, and let the world fill of dirty crime. So many negative factors tell us we should stop corruption on the earth. Nevertheless, if people keep on this selfish aspect, people will destroy everything on earth, including ourselves, who think we were mighty.

Gifts to the after school working teens

In Taiwan, critics call people who were born during 1980’s “strawberries” because the group of young people looks pretty in their appearance, but they do not how to face the trouble and can not stand pressure. Moreover, in Asian society, it is unusual to see teens deliver newspaper or milk to people’s houses because few teens do that. When people find a teen who works in the evening, they will feel that this teen is poor in finances. Thus, she or he should have a job to support their school work or family. However, jobs for teens are not strange in America. Teens would go or be asked to get an after-school job by parents in the United States. In fact, it is beneficial that teens work after school because they can get work experience, learn how to manage their time, and become responsible people.

First, teens obtain social skills and knowledge from their jobs. The ability teens acquire from work can help teens deal with similar accidents when they get trouble or must solve problems in life. For example, a boyfriend knows how to make a good coffee for his girlfriend at midnight when she wants to drink it because he worked in the Starbucks once. So, the work experience improves teens’ skills and helps them when people need them. Moreover, the job also gives teens some chances to face our society. Facing their bosses or customers, teens feel pressure due to the fact that they want to perform well and avoid failure. Fortunately, most people more easily forgive children’s mistakes than adults. A boss will choose to blame on the adult when a child and an adult both make a mistake on money because he thinks the adult should have more knowledge and attention. From this process, teens know they still have chances to correct their mistakes, and remind themselves what they should do to let their bosses happy, or what they should not do in order to be not punished. In short, teens should learn some skills to prepare for their future.

Next, teenagers can learn how to arrange their schedule around homework, review in class, friends, dating, and, of course, their jobs. Friendship is more important in teenage era, and teens want to spend more time to get with their buddies. Also, they have some habits they want to do in the routine, such as doing exercise or watching television programs. At the same time, they spend some time in their job, and discover they do not have time to accompany their friends. Therefore, the only way to solve the scarce time problem is rearranging their original schedule. They may decrease the television time and increase the dating time to go out with their friends or cancel some chores to go swimming. Due to the fact that the time is constricted, teens will know how important time is, and they will value time.

Finally, teens will learn to take responsibility for themselves because they should go to work on time and do well for jobs, or their wages will be deducted. Silvers (2007), claims that “All teenagers love the idea of having their own money” (para. 3). So, teens care about money, and money lets teens care about their time and work. Caring about something gives them responsibility. It is very important for human development to have responsibility. If people are indifferent to everything, they will not care about their lives. Furthermore, when people feel life is nothing, they commit suicide or injure other people. This is why so many teenagers make a lot of problems in the society. However, a responsible person will gain more achievements because he knows how valuable life is, and wants to do his best. Thus, getting a job after school is a chance for teens to shape their minds and get a sense of responsibility.

Opponents of after school job for teenagers say that people in teenage years are misled easily or go on the wrong way without thinking if they meet a bad guy like a thief or a criminal at their jobs. However, this attitude is wrong because it causes teenagers to fear problems in their occupation and lack experience dealing with the interpersonal relation in social occasion when they become adults. For example, a new singer in Taiwan was accused by his company recently, and he did nothing but felt disappointed and cried at his home. Ironically, he graduated from very famous college and has high education, but he does not know how to face the adversity and is a person like a baby crying to his family to get help. On the other hand, some people know how to handle the accident because they earned the similar event in the past. Silvers (2007), writes that “Having an after-school job will give your teenager a taste of what life would be like” (para. 4). Therefore, after-school is a way that people can learn special experience and prepare for the future. Thus, we should not worry overly about the environment where teens may meet trouble. On the contrary, we should train and accompany our teens to face the adverse circumstances, and this will bring them the successful life in the future.

It is very clear that teens should have a job after school. Working after school gives them some valuable experience to initially understand the social system and interact with friends and strangers. Also, it reminds teens the importance of time and teaches them how to control their time effectively, and result that teens will be responsible to their life. There are so many benefits about after-school jobs. Therefore, people should encourage young students to have a job because we do not want our children to become strawberries.
